Maria Emmelin forskar om våld mot kvinnor och barn ur ett internationellt såväl som nationellt perspektiv. Hon har medverkat i WHO studien om våld mot kvinnor, WHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against Women (2005), specifikt i den Etiopiska delstudien och har även varit involverad i kvalitativa och kvantitativa studier om våld mot kvinnor i Indonesien, Tanzania och Bangladesh.
